Gluten-Free ANZAC Biscuits

The good old Anzac biscuit is as synonymous with Anzac Day as two-up, the Last Post, poppies, rosemary and people crowding the streets to honour our fallen service people.

Homegrown uncontaminated oats on the menu for Aussies avoiding gluten

Anthea Moodie from ABC rural wrote this great article about our new Aussie Oats and some of the challenges GF Oats have faced sourcing this Australian grown product.

Previously, if you were one of the 15 per cent of Australians with a gluten-free diet, trying oats meant paying for imported products as most grain growers in Australia also shared silos and harvesters with other grains, like wheat.

Founder of Gloriously Free Oats Australia Kylie Martin says COVID restrictions have interrupted supply from the US, giving her the chance to work with a Western Australian farmer to produce oats that have never come into contact with other gluten grains

The Aussie oat company fighting to label its products gluten-free

Kochies Business Builders website recently featured an article detailing Kylies ongoing battle to be able to use the term gluten free oats to refer to the GF oats product. Here is an excerpt from this great article:

For Kylie, this is a constant source of frustration. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. A multi-year Australian study into food labelling is in the final stages and Kylie is hopeful that before the year is out, she will be able to slap the ‘gluten free’ label on all her products.
“Imagine building a multi-million dollar business and not being able to label your products properly,” she said. “We are turning over two tonnes of oat products, and just launched our Aussie Oats product, and really want to be able to reach more people without having to explain what uncontaminated means.”

Aussie oats fight for right to wear gluten-free label

A PUSH is on to get oats grown and handled in Australia under special conditions labelled as gluten free. Driving it is GK Gluten Free Foods managing director, Kylie Martin, who says food-labelling laws in Australia and New Zealand are out of whack with those in the rest of the world. This anomaly locks out Australian farmers wishing to supply the niche domestic and potential export markets.

Food and Beverage Award Winners Announced

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food & Beverage Industry Awards event had to be delivered online, but that didn’t stop a plethora of entries coming in from all corners of Australia – and what an impressive array it was.

One common theme among this years’ entries, unsurprisingly, was the determination and ability to change with the times as the world was enveloped in a pandemic. It showed that not only is the industry chock-full of people with great ideas, but also the resilience to get on with the job when trouble strikes.

Sales doubled in four months

Coronavirus has been an ill wind for many, but it has blown only good for Highfields business GF Oats. GF Oats packages and markets gluten free rolled oats. According to owners Garry McGeorge and Kylie Martin Hollonds, COVID-19 highlighted weaknesses in their supply chains and revenue streams. “It was really stressful back in February, but we have built a stronger and more resilient team to help our business move forward. We have changed contractors, engaged a business strategist as well as a marketing team to help us develop a growth strategy and expand our customer networks for the future,” said Kylie.

5 activities to remember the Anzacs without leaving home

For all Australians, ANZAC Day is
going to look a little different this year, but this doesn’t mean the
men and women who bravely fought for our freedom will be forgotten. In
fact, ANZAC Day could touch our hearts a little deeper during this unique time when we are all experiencing what it’s like to live without our usual freedoms; some of which we can carelessly take for granted,
like taking the kids to the park, not having everyday access to the
supermarket or enjoying a meal at your favourite restaurant.

How Gloriously Free Oats founder Kylie Martin forged an ANZAC partnership to keep her business going in the face of supply chain peril.

While many businesses deal with a collapse in customers coming through their doors, Martin’s business, which specialises in gluten free oat products, has experienced the opposite, as demand for rolled oat products explodes as Aussies stockpile for a winter in lockdown.

Many of us bake Anzac biscuits all year round, not just for Anzac Day. Not only are they delicious, but they’re also easy to make – the traditional recipe generally consists of a simple mixture of flour, oats, golden syrup, desiccated coconut, sugar, butter and bicarbonate of soda.

We were excited to be featured in the Best Desserts – Best Anzac Biscuit recipes article this month along with many other wonderful recipes.

Kylie Martin is the founding director of GK Gluten Free Foods. The journey of food intolerances began for Kylie and her family over 20 years ago when she realised they had Intolerance’s to various foods such as dairy, corn, soy, gluten and wheat to name a few. So, it was into the kitchen, trialling recipes with unfamiliar and incredibly hard to source ingredients. She launched her first range of flour pre-mixes in 2000 into health food and in 2009 imported 750kg of Gluten Free Oats into Australia. Today the company is based in regional Queensland and despite the restrictive labelling laws, Kylie and her team are importing in excess of 100 tonne a year, supplying Australia and New Zealand with GF Oats and oat related products.

2019 AusMumpreneur Food & Beverage Business Excellence Award Gold winner

After 10 years, she thinks she’s an Overnight Success! Ten years ago, Kylie saw a unique opportunity to start something new in Australia, to be the first to import and produce Gluten Free Oats. As her ‘Why’ is leaving a legacy in the world, this fitted into her overall plan beautifully. What she did not realise however, was that the journey would, in fact, take every bit of resilience, courage, tenacity, creativeness and guts she could muster to make her dream a reality.

Embracing The ANZAC Spirit In The Midst Of A Crisis Virus and Crisis Magazine Article

The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges to face Australia in modern times. Serendipitously, this crisis falls over ANZAC Day, a time when we typically gather to honour our Armed Forces and reflect on the resilience, strength and hardship endured by past generations. There will unfortunately be no gatherings of remembrance this year, though. It’s always the small things you’d typically take for granted that help get you through a crisis. For me, it’s been the humble ANZAC biscuit – and everything it stands for – creating a silver lining to the coronavirus catastrophe and reminding me that the ANZAC spirit lives on, even if it is from our homes.
