Learn More About Oats

If you are new to oats or are reintroducing them into your diet, you are in for a treat!

With so many great options for cooking and preparing oats, you'll never be bored with your food. But before we send you off to try all the delicious recipes, we will start with the basics.

1. What Are Oats?

Oats are a type of cereal grain known for their nutritional benefits. They are rich in fibre, particularly beta-glucan, which helps lower cholesterol levels and supports heart health. Oats are also a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2. How to Prepare Oats

Preparing oats is simple and can be done in several ways to suit your taste and schedule. We reccommend soaking your oats overnight if you aren't using them in baking.

Soaking Oats

Soaking oats is a popular method that involves letting the oats sit in liquid overnight. To soak oats, combine them with an equal part of your preferred liquid (water, milk, or a milk alternative) in a bowl or jar. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

It's that easy!

Why Do Oats Need to Be Soaked?

Soaking oats helps to soften them, making them easier to digest and quicker to cook. It also enhances the bioavailability of nutrients, allowing your body to absorb more vitamins and minerals. Additionally, soaking can reduce the natural phytic acid in oats, which can interfere with nutrient absorption.

3. How to Cook Oats

Cooking oats can be done in a few simple steps:

Stovetop Method:

1.Combine oats with water or milk in a pot (usually a 1:2 ratio of oats to liquid).
2.Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.
3.Cook, stirring occasionally, until the oats are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid (about 5-10 minutes for rolled oats).
4.Add your favorite toppings like fruits, nuts, or sweeteners.

Microwave Method:

Combine oats with water or milk in a microwave-safe bowl (same 1:2 ratio).
Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway through.
Let the oats sit for a minute to thicken, then add desired toppings.
Enjoy your oats in various forms, from classic oatmeal to overnight oats, smoothies, or baked goods. Experiment with different recipes and find what you love!
