The Rise of Lupin in Food Products and Why Labelling Matters

Plant-based proteins are on the rise, and with that comes the increased use of lupin in food products worldwide. While lupin is a nutritious and sustainable ingredient, it also presents a risk for those with allergies, particularly individuals with a peanut allergy.

The Growing Concern of Lupin Allergy

Though lupin allergy is relatively rare in Australia, affecting less than 1% of the population, cases are becoming more common globally.

What makes lupin especially concerning is its potential cross-reactivity with peanuts. This means that those with peanut allergies could also react to lupin, often without realizing it.

Research on Lupin and Peanut Allergies

A recent study tested a group of participants who either had a peanut allergy, a lupin allergy, or no known food allergies. The results were eye-opening:

  • 44% of those with a peanut allergy also tested positive for lupin allergy.
  • The most common reaction? Anaphylaxis, which is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic response.
  • Some individuals reacted to as little as one gram of lupin flour.

Key Lupin Proteins Identified

Further research identified the specific lupin proteins most likely to trigger allergic reactions, with γ-conglutin emerging as the main culprit.

Given the serious risks involved, researchers strongly recommend clear labelling of lupin in food products, ensuring that those with allergies can make informed choices and stay safe.

Lupin Labelling Regulations in Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand have already taken steps to improve allergen transparency. Since May 2018, it has been mandatory to label products containing lupin.

This regulation helps consumers easily identify and avoid lupin if necessary.
