Cinnamon Roll Smoothie

Any time of the year is a good time for a delicious, nutrient-rich smoothie, and we honestly believe oat smoothies are some of the best around.

If you’re in the mood for a substantive smoothie that’s deliciously sweet but not overwhelmingly sugary, we have the perfect option for you: the cinnamon roll smoothie.

Learn all about this wonderful drink below, how to make it, and the many reasons why oats are the perfect ingredient to incorporate into more of your smoothies and treats.

Healthy Oat Smoothie Recipe

The following recipe covers a single serving of an oat-based cinnamon roll smoothie. Depending on how many servings you want, make sure you multiply the necessary ingredients accordingly.

This is a great smoothie that matches a pleasant cinnamon roll-like flavour profile with a healthy combination of ingredients that include soy milk, banana, rolled oats, yoghurt, flax seeds, and the optional use of collagen powder.

If you’re not familiar with collagen powder, it’s a protein that’s noted to have potential health benefits, particularly concerning skin health and bone density.

Regardless of whether you decide to include collagen powder or not, you’ll still end up with a smoothie that’s strikingly flavourful and rich in nutrients.

Check out the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups Oat Milk
  • ½ Banana
  • 2 tbsp Rolled Oats
  • 1 serving Collagen Powder, optional
  • 1 tbsp Yoghurt (I used coconut)
  • 1 tsp Flax Seeds
  • 1 tsp Maple Syrup
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Vanilla Extract

Method:

Simply add all the ingredients to your blender and blend them to your desired consistency.

Benefits of Oats in Smoothies

Several benefits come from including oats in any smoothie you make. You can get these benefits from using rolled oats (such as with the above recipe), quick oats, steel-cut oats, or even using oat milk as a base.

So, let’s take a look at these key benefits:

Creamy Consistency

Oats are incredibly versatile and can offer a range of textures depending on how you prepare them. For smoothies, oats that are soaked overnight (or at least for a few hours) will soften significantly. So, when blended, the end result is a creamy but substantive texture that’s pleasant and filling - much like what you’d expect from a typical smoothie.

The same applies to smoothies where you use oat milk as a base. Oat milk has a creamy texture reminiscent of full-cream milk, making it a fantastic option for making smoothies.

Stay Satisfied for Longer

It’s no secret that oats are rich in fibre, which offers two key benefits. The first is that fibre is good for digestive health - it promotes regularity, healthy bowel movements, and can reduce instances of digestive upset.

The second benefit of a fibre-rich smoothie is satiety. Consuming fibre helps you manage your appetite, leaving you feeling fuller for longer. This makes oat-based smoothies a fantastic option for anyone trying to reduce their daily intake or who wants to maintain or lose weight.

Healthy and Delicious

Last but certainly not least, oats are healthy and delicious. Packed full of essential vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre and a healthy dose of calcium, oats undeniably pack a punch of the health front.

As oats tend to have a mild flavour that can perceptively hit sweet and savoury notes, they’re the perfect accompaniment to almost all manner of smoothies. So whether you’re enjoying a sweet cinnamon roll smoothie or a more savoury veggie-based smoothie, oats will complement both styles with delicious ease.

Do Oats Need To be Soaked for a Smoothie?

While it’s not necessary to soak your oats before using them in a smoothie, there are general health benefits that come with soaking oats. This stems from the existence of phytic acid, which is present in all oats.

When phytic acid content is high, it hinders your body’s ability to absorb key minerals present in oats, including iron, zinc, and calcium. Soaking your oats - even for an hour or two - will reduce the phytic acid content and, in turn, increase how effectively your body can absorb these key minerals. This is part of why overnight oats are a popular breakfast choice.

Another good reason for soaking oats is to do with texture. If you prefer a smoother, softer texture for your smoothies, soaking your oats will make it possible to produce a smoother end product.
