Oats have always been our bread and butter at GF Oats for over 14 years, so it's natural that we've become oat milk aficionados while experimenting with our own oats. If you've never heard of Oat Milk before, oat milk is a great alternative to cow's milk and has quickly become a favourite amongst the plant-based and vegan communities worldwide. Its popularity also stems from the fact that oat milk is creamier and thicker than almond milk (one of the first popular cow's milk alternatives for coffee enthusiasts), and tastes delicious when substituted in a tea or coffee, as it can be frothed nicely.
Oat milk is a great alternative especially because it has all the benefits of oats! Oats are not just a great nutritional breaky ingredient for oatmeal, cookies and more, but oat milk gives you all the nutritional vitamins, minerals and fibre intake goodness you need in liquid form.
If you're interested in giving oat milk a try, why not try our raw oat milk recipe. This recipe is super easy, uses minimal ingredients and creates great oat milk! If you're not sure about making oat milk from scratch, you can also try out our GF Oat Milk Making Kit that makes oat milk-making even easier.
Whether you use the GF Oats Kit or try this recipe out yourself, and you prefer your milk to be a bit sweeter, you can also sweeten your oat milk to the perfect sweetness level as you please.
Here's our awesome raw oat milk recipe:
Ingredients
- 1 cup GF Oats
- 1 1/2 litres water (you can substitute some of the water for Coconut Water if you like)
- 2 dates
Method
At least several hours before you're going to make the oat milk:
- Place the oats and dates in a bottle/container, pour the water over them, and shake or stir for a moment.
- Let them soak in the refrigerator for at least several hours or more; overnight is fine. The longer the soaking time the tastier the final product.
When you're ready to make your oat milk:
- Transfer the oat mixture into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour the contents of the blender into a clean nut milk bag (muslin cloth will work fine also) that you've placed over a bowl large enough to hold all the oat milk, and strain it through the bag. This involves squeezing and kneading the bag. The idea is to get all the liquid through the bag, leaving only what's left of the solid oats inside.
- Your oat milk is now ready! Just pour it into clean glass jars, cover and refrigerate.
You will notice that after your oat milk has been sitting for a little while it will start to separate. Just shake it up before you use it.
Kylie also make all the oat milk using the GF Oats for the Oat Soaps.
Now that you've made your oat milk, you can use it in preparing your breakfast, for your cereal, coffee or you can also use it for making delicious foods!
At GF Oats, we love to experiment with all things to do with oats, and so we've been making some awesome recipes in our Recipes section that use oats and oat milk in particular.
