In Australia, oats cannot legally be labelled “gluten free” under FSANZ food labelling laws even when they are pure, uncontaminated and tested to be free from wheat, rye and barley.
If you travel overseas you will see ‘gluten free oats’ labelled all around the world, this provides a lot of confusion to customers in Australia.
The reason is that the authorities led by Coeliac Australia are choosing to not allow oats to be labelled gluten free. Although pure, uncontaminated oats don't naturally contain the same gluten proteins found in wheat, rye and barley, up to 10% may react to the protein avenin contained in oats.
According to Coeliac Australia, pure oats are safely tolerated by the vast majority of people with coeliac disease, 90% and they are now recommending oats to coeliacs to support other medical conditions.
Because there is currently no simple way to predict who will react, people with coeliac disease are advised to speak with their medical team before introducing oats and may need to complete an oat challenge to assess their individual tolerance.
At GF Oats Australia, we originally imported oats from a family of Coeliacs in the US that started the project showing the world that oats grown in strict conditions were good for coeliacs which led to oats being labelled ‘gluten free oats’ in 2003.
Our Australian oats are grown and processed following the Global Oats Protocol to prevent contamination from gluten grains. Every batch is independently tested, giving our customers confidence they are choosing pure, uncontaminated Australian oats.
So, while we can’t call them “gluten free” in Australia, we can proudly say they are specially produced and tested to be free from contamination from wheat, rye and barley.
Please refer to Coeliac Australia’s position on oats for up to date information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are GF Oats gluten free?
A. Here in Australia, we are unable to call any product that contains oats gluten free. We do claim we are the oats you can trust because we ensure that each batch of oats are tested to be free from the gluten contamination from wheat, rye and barley.
Q. How do you test the oats to ensure they are free from the gluten found in wheat, rye and barley?
A. Great question. We send a sample of oats to an independent testing lab called Symbio where they test for ‘gluten’ contamination. They can measure gliadin, hordein, and secalin.
So why aren’t GF Oats labelled gluten free?
In Australia, oats cannot legally be labelled “gluten free” under FSANZ food labelling laws even when they are pure, uncontaminated and tested to be free from wheat, rye and barley.

Our Commitment to you It is important to us here at GK Gluten Free Foods that we provide Australian consumers with oats that are free from contamination from the gluten that is found in wheat, rye and barley.
To ensure that we are providing you with “The Oats You Can Trust” we partner with our approved network of Australian farmers who follow the Global Oats Protocol growing clean, uncontaminated oats. Their oats are uniquely grown using minimal impact growing techniques and crop exclusion zones, and are processed in facilities that are free from the contamination from the gluten found in wheat, rye, spelt and barley grains.
Australian Labelling Laws Current labelling laws in Australia and New Zealand restrict us from labelling any product that contains oats as gluten-free. Other countries around the world have different labelling laws that apply to uncontaminated oats.
Testing Each batch of oats is independently tested by Symbio in Brisbane. The gluten test from Symbio is reported as <3ppm as this is the level of quantification for their testing. They use the R-biopharm test kit for gluten, which uses an antigen-antibody reaction to determine gluten levels. <3ppm effectively equates to ‘0’ or nil gluten detected.
Note: 2015 updates to the labelling laws now allow us to label GF Oats products as “Low Gluten”. Low Gluten simply means <20ppm which still doesn’t represent the purity of our product.
'Wheat free' Oats also does NOT represent the purity of our oats. As there is no formal definition of what 'Wheat free' means, it can be presumed that they are NOT free from Rye or Barley. We consider this to be a serious problem for customers.
ANZAC Biscuits It is a requirement of Veterans Affairs that any product that carries the word ANZAC for commercial purposes be approved. We are pleased to inform all our customers that we have done this. The letter of Approval received by Veterans Affairs can be viewed here.
FAQ’S We appreciate that customers have many questions regarding this product and the branding as it can be confusing when we are unable to completely communicate the true representation of these oats due to labelling restrictions.
